Glamour. Glitz. Fame. Money. That is what we think of when envisioning the lives of renowned Hollywood actors. What we do not take into consideration are the hardships they have endured along the way and the barriers they had to cross to reach their status. Taylor Jenkins Reid's fascinating read “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” tells the tale of reclusive old-schoolHollywood icon Evelyn Hugo. This book rose to prominence with the help of a subcommunity on TikTok titled “BookTok”. Book influencers making raving reviews of this book due to its brilliant writing and refreshing story inspired other viewers, such as me, to pick it up, and I can say this has been an amazing decision.
The plot of “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” goes like this: an amateur journalist, named Monique Grant, gets the opportunity of a lifetime, she is chosen by Evelyn herself to write her biography about her scandalous life. After all, affair allegations followed her throughout her lengthy career. “Why her?” is a question that Monique constantly asks herself left to wonder if she’ll ever find out. Spoiler alert, she does. After not being in the spotlight for a long time, Evelyn lets her guard down and narrates her whole story, not only the good and serenebut also the unpleasant parts. Monique learns of the never-before-said exclusive information that only the closest people in Evelyn's life know. However, the prominent question is which of the seven husbands was her true love. And, if you want to know the answer to this question, I suggest you pick the book and give it a read.
In my opinion, “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” is truly aterrific book. I finished it in three hours after getting it, that is how much it enthralled me. This book is characterized as Historical Fiction, but it bears a bit of all genres such as biography, romance, and drama. This book deals with a multitude of issues, such as racism, homophobia, and sexism. One of its main points was Evelyn's managing to carve herself a path in an industry that was inherently sexist at that time.
I cannot stop commending this book enough, but it bears its flaws. Some BIPOC(Bisexual People Of Color) and queer reviewers have commented that at times it can be quite tone-deaf. As I cannot speak for them, I internalized their criticism. I enjoyed “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo”, but please bear in mind the reviewer's point of view when reading it.
If you are looking for a fascinating and thrilling read, then I wholeheartedly recommend “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo”. And suppose I haven’t piqued your interest enough for you to purchase the book.
