Does AI Have a Spot in Medicine?

Artificial Intelligence is one of the most powerful tools that holds the power to revolutionize many aspects of human life, whose strength and power comes from how well humans wield it. However, integrating AI into critical systems raises significant concerns, as AI does not think the same way as humans do. Proven in a recent experiment published in the journal JAMA Network Open, where 50 doctors were asked to diagnose medical conditions from examining case reports, some of them assigned to use Chat GPT to help decision making.  AI’s efficiency and agility in making decisions offered them an advantage, but only with a 2% percentage. So, the doctors who worked on their own scored 74%, and the ones helped by AI 76%, but AI on its own outperformed both, scoring 90%.

One point of view from the experiment is that, while ChatGPT may outperform doctors when given clean, structured information,  machines cannot fully grasp the complexity of human life, which is important in healthcare.

While AI can enhance human capabilities and sometimes seems to surpass them, as in this example, it can not replace the judgment and understanding of a human doctor, nor its emotional intelligence.

It is clear that the doctors were swayed by AI's viewpoints, and some of them were even hesitant to completely believe that AI's recommendations would affect the study's findings. Doctors must learn not only how to use AI effectively but also when to trust its conclusions, which can be very challenging, especially when they cannot trust themselves at times.

Despite these challenges, the potential of AI in healthcare is undeniable.

In conclusion, while AI can enhance human capabilities and sometimes seems to surpass them, it serves as an assistive tool rather than a replacement for humans, as it cannot replace the human brain with its emotional intelligence, creativity, and moral judgment, and can only process data quickly and follow given instructions.
